Alan James Middleton ARIBA (1926 - 1998)
Alan James Middleton was an architect, painter and
draughtsman who was born in Coventry, his father was James Charles
Middleton, an artist and teacher. They were both members of the
Wapping Group of Artists. Alan painted in oil, pastel and watercolour,
laterly he painted mainly in watercolours. He was educated at St
Olave's School, Southwark where his father was the art master. During
WWII he was in the Navy and served in Minesweepers with an interest
in Metrology which helped in his painting of clouds for which he
is particularly noted. After the war he attended Liverpool University
and studied architecture with the Architectural Association School.
He joined Richard Sheppard Architectural practice, his building
designs included many schools in the Southampton area and of particular
note is his design of the School of Navigation at Southampton. He
exhibited at the Royal Academy (an architectural perspective), Royal
Society of British Artists, Pastel Society and elsewhere. His work
was reproduced by the Medici Society. He lived in London and Chislehurst
in Kent, where he designed his own house (27 Logs Hill), it has
been added to since his original design with an extension and a
pitched roof. |

Reginald T Jones RBA (1857 - 1920)
Reginald Jones was born in Old Charlton
Kent in 1857, his father was Theophilus R Jones, a Clerk in Drummonds
Bank. Reginald was a landscape painter in oils and watercolour who
exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists
and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour from 1880. He
visited Italy, Switzerland, Corsica and France - particularly Brittany
and Pont Aven. In the UK he had a particular love of the Essex Countryside
but also sketched the Dorset and Devon coast. He lived at Shrublands,
Eltham in Kent and was a member of the Blackheath Art Club. There

Gordon Hales RSMA RBA (1916 - 1997)
Gordon Hales was born in Matlock in Derbyshire
and studied art at Leicester College of Art and Northampton School
of Art. He painted in oil, pastel and watercolour mainly marine
subjects, ships, the sea , the Thames, men at work, the streets
of London and half light. He was a member of the RSMA, the Royal
Society of British Artists, member of the Wapping Group and the
Langham Sketch Club, Artists Society and a founder of the London
Muster of Artists. He lived in Watford in Herfordshire. He was
President of the Wapping Group of Artists in 1997. Gordon died
on 1st Sept 1997. |
